The history of the Church and its Priory :
The early monastic buildings from the Benedictine Community (sent by the Abbey of Saint Géraud d’Aurillac in the eleventh century) were enlarged in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
The monastery developed around a small cloister built onto the church’s nave. The Priory Chateau, next to the cloister, was where the prior lived. “Château” (castle) refers here to the defensive role that the building played, which can be seen from its dominant position over the valley, the remaining ramparts and the narrow windows on the ground floor.
Towards the end of the fifteenth century an extra storey was added to the old château and the east and north facades were remodelled in the then fashionable style of the Cahors Renaissance (the Renaissance Cadurcienne: Cahors is only 50 kilometres away). Mullioned windows and casements were designed in accordance with the ornamental vocabulary dear to the sculptors of Quercy, with sun-shaped rose windows, ragged rose staffs, indented foliage etc.
